UPDATE on the HERITAGE RAILINGS PROJECTApril 28th, 2016 | Posted by in Uncategorized
Friends of Imperial Square Heritage and Conservation (FISHAC) was established as a charity some five years ago to raise funds to reinstate and repair the heritage and conservation assets in Imperial Square and Gardens. Its initial aim was to reinstate the ornamental iron railings and entrances, which are such a feature in Cheltenham, around Imperial Gardens. These were removed in 1940 as part of the war effort.
Owing variously to the changes in funding procedures by grant aiding bodies and charities, and in part from competition of other worthy conservation projects in the town, insufficient funds have been raised to undertake the entire project at this stage.
Nevertheless, following generous financial support from local residents, a number of local businesses, local grant organisations and through fund raising events, a revised programme to kick start the project by reinstating the railings and entrance on the east side of the Gardens and the railings adjacent to the stone pillar to the left hand side looking at the front of the Town Hall, on the north side has been put in place.
The original stone plinths on which the railings are mounted still exist.
This work has been undertaken through the considerable support and co-operation of Cheltenham Borough Council Green Space Dept. and the work carried out by Ironwork Contractors. The work is in accordance with the approved Planning Permission.
These features provide a meaningful and impressive representation of how the railings would have originally looked before removal – a sense of how it was, whilst continuing to retain the open aspect of the Gardens.
FISHAC are extremely grateful to all those who have supported this work to help conserve and enhance this beautiful Square and Gardens. If any individual, benefactor or organisation wishes to support this restoration project then please get in touch.
